Maybe you’ve waited until the last minute and need a good fallback gift or just haven’t been able to come up with something unique this year. We get that buying gifts for the females in your life is both difficult and probably one of your least favorite things to do….nevertheless, you still have to do it. Hopefully whoever you are buying for is understanding enough to accept that every gift won’t be perfect and every now and then you’ll slip up and buy us something we just don’t want. But to help avoid this catastrophe as often as possible, we’ve come up with a few categories of gifts you should steer clear of. Think of these items as the Kevin Federlines of the gift world.
- The Practical Gift: A gift is meant to be something that you wouldn’t ordinarily buy for yourself. Never buy a woman something that she “needs” like an appliance or a new vacuum cleaner. These gifts are also things that require work whether it be cooking or cleaning. A gift should bring some luxury or relaxation, not housework. Some women might also take offense to a house item as these can suggest an underlying stereotype that women belong only in the kitchen and the bedroom. (more…)
Women like to play this fun little game where we speak in codes and say the opposite of what we really mean. Actually, we don’t consciously do it, and there’s no real explanation or logic behind it. Being able to read between the lines of our gift hints will take you a long way in finding the right gift for any occasion.
Even though you may mean it, when we say “you don’t have to get me anything,” we don’t really mean that at all. If you take this to heart and show up empty handed you will probably have an unhappy lady on your hands. Even if you and your significant other agree to forego presents for a certain holiday, at least get her a card or a small gift. Homemade gifts show a great deal of care and usually take significantly more time and effort than picking up a gift from a store or ordering it online. When given on appropriate occasions and carefully considering the personality of the recipient, these gifts can be a huge hit. A homemade gift is probably not the best idea for your 25th wedding anniversary or your wife’s 40th birthday; basically any monumental occasion when a woman’s likely to expect something with a nice price tag. When you decide to give a woman a homemade gift think about how much she’d actually appreciate it not just how nifty you think it is. Someone who appreciates craftiness and handwork is much more apt to enjoy this kind of gift than someone drawn to designer labels and expensive brands. That title may sound like a joke since all women get a bad reputation for being impossible to buy presents for, but with only a few exceptions, mothers are generally abnormally appreciative of presents from their children. Most people can do no wrong in their mother’s eyes and any gift you give her will be cherished and shown off to all her friends. However, just because she’s easy to buy for doesn’t mean you should skimp on any of her gifts.
